Every new patient of Veterinary Specialists of
Alaska, P.C. will undergo a thorough general examination. The head, mouth,
haircoat, chest, belly, and legs are examined, your veterinarian will listen to
the heart and lungs, and the temperature will be taken. If indicated, further
diagnostic examinations will be performed. If your animal is presented because
of lameness, a complete orthopedic examination will be performed. Veterinary
Specialists of Alaska, P.C. is proud to be the only clinic in the state of Alaska to offer the service of three board-certified
surgeons,
Drs. Edwards,
Priddy, and
von Pfeil. The
board-certified surgeon will thoroughly observe the gait of your pet, and palpate,
extend and flex your animal’s extremities. Animals that present for a
neurologic condition undergo a thorough neurological examination, following a
specifically designed examination protocol. Several reflexes are tested, the
eyes will be evaluated, and the neck, the legs, and the spine (backbone) may be
carefully placed through a range of motion or may be carefully palpated. Most
patients benefit from physical rehabilitation after surgery.
Dr. Chang is the head of our
department for physical rehabilitation, and will ensure that your pet will
obtain the best post-operative care possible to recover quickly. Animals that
visit this department for other conditions such as chronic arthritis or weight
loss programs are examined thoroughly prior to starting an individually
designed program. Animals presenting for a skin problem are thoroughly
evaluated as well. In addition to the general examination our board-certified
dermatologist may perform cytology of the skin and ears, skin scrapings or
collect hair samples to diagnose or rule out certain problems and recommend
other testing if appropriate. A very important part of the first examination of
your pet with the dermatologist
Dr. Preziosi is to
obtain a detailed history. You may help us by filling in our specifically
designed
questionnaire for dermatologic patients prior to your appointment.
